Story

June 23, 2014--10 years ago--was the beginning of my battle with Ewing Sarcoma--a 15-month treatment journey. This year's 5K, on June 22, 2024, will commemorate my ninth year anniversary as a sarcoma survivor!   You can click on the link at the end of this message to view my video story (created a few years ago).

Sarcoma (of which there are over 70 varieties) is a cancer that originates in the connective tissues of the body, which includes muscles, bones, cartilage, fat, blood vessels, nerves, and other supportive tissues.   It is a rare form of cancer, accounting for only 1% of all adult cancers, yet 20% of pediatric cancers.  Despite its rarity, sarcoma can be a devastating disease that can result in significant morbidity and mortality.   16,000 people are diagnosed with some form of sarcoma  every year, and the great tragedy is that 6000 deaths from this disease occur yearly. The 5-year survival rate for sarcoma is approximately 50%, which is much lower than many other forms of cancer.  Finding a cure could save the lives of many patients who would otherwise succumb to the disease, which is difficult to treat, with relatively few effective treatment options available.  Surgery is often the primary treatment, but it is not always possible to remove all the cancerous tissue.  Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can also be used, but are not always effective and can have significant side effects. Finding a cure for sarcoma is crucial because it could save lives, improve the quality of life for survivors, provide additional treatment options and advance our understanding of cancer.

Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma has proudly granted over $2,000,000 to support sarcoma research since our inception in 2011, and we are the first 100% volunteer-led organization to do so. The funds we grant --through your generosity--store precious sarcoma tissue resources and enable researchers to perform life-saving studies.  Your support has been vital and so greatly appreciated.  As a more than grateful survivor, who has been more than fortunate, I thank you from the bottom of my heart .  Let's cure sarcoma!!!
