On Friday, June 13, 2025, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in situ, a rare form of breast cancer based on its location and characteristics. Just a few weeks later, on July 29, 2025, I underwent a single mastectomy of my left breast.
The diagnosis came completely out of nowhere and rocked our world. I was blessed that my treatment did not require chemotherapy or radiation, but there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about the possibility of it returning. You never forget hearing the words, “You have cancer.”
One important lesson I want to share is this: please get your regular mammograms. I did everything I was supposed to do, including routine screenings, and this still happened to me. Early detection made a tremendous difference in my journey and gave me the opportunity to address the cancer before it progressed further.
Throughout this experience, my husband has been my rock. His love, strength, and unwavering support have carried me through some of the most difficult days of my life. Even now, the journey is not over. I still experience fatigue from time to time, and I continue to undergo surgeries as part of my breast reconstruction process—a process that is far more challenging than most people realize.
Cancer has changed my perspective on life. I see so many things differently now. I cherish every moment I spend with my husband, my children, and my grandchildren. I have learned that life is a precious gift, and none of us are promised tomorrow.
Today, I am grateful for every day, every memory, and every opportunity to spend time with the people I love. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, and I am determined to do exactly that.
I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Closings and Camo, our son-in-law’s company, for sponsoring my Panerathon team.
My team is participating in Panerathon to raise money for the entity[“organization”,“Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center”,“Youngstown, Ohio breast care center”], which provides life-changing care, support, and resources to individuals facing breast cancer.
Please consider making a donation to support our team and the important work of the JACBCC. Your generosity helps provide hope, care, and support to countless individuals and families affected by breast cancer.
Thank you for your support.
