Pedal the Cause

Family, Friends, and Colleagues,

It's that time of year again where I dust off my bike shorts and gear up for my seventh year riding with WWT's Pedal The Cause team.  This year my son Graham is back in the saddle too, riding in the PTC kids ride, which means I now have a training partner who is both faster than me and less afraid of hills.  It's humbling.

Pedal The Cause is the region's largest cancer fundraiser, but after seven years of doing this, I can tell you it's really more of a family that shows up for each other.

Here's why I ride:

I ride for Mark Fredrickson, who fought brain cancer for five years with more grit than anyone I've known, and who we still miss every day since we lost him in January 2022.

I ride for Trisha Britt, who has now beaten cancer twice and treats each fight like it owed her money.  If stubbornness were a treatment, she'd have cured it for everyone.

I ride for Sean Scott, who beat cancer in 2019 and somehow made the whole ordeal funnier than it had any right to be.  Proof that humor might be the best coping mechanism science hasn't officially approved yet.

I ride for my sister Jamie Grieshaber, who beat breast cancer in 2024 and reminded our whole family what strength actually looks like up way to close.

I ride for Liz Berwin, who we lost in June 2024, and whose absence is still one I ride.

Every one of these people is why I keep signing up, year after year.
