Race for Recovery: Honoring Anthony Salem

"A good soldier is ne'er forgotten, whether he dieth by musket or by pot." These powerful words from Bill's Story in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous resonate deeply, reminding us that the battles fought within, often in the quiet corners of our lives, are as significant as those on any battlefield.

Just as Earl Shaffer, the first person to walk the entire Appalachian Trail after returning home from World War II, sought to "walk the war out of his system," Anthony Salem found his solace and strength in movement. A combat veteran, Anthony battled addiction for years before joining the Army. Yet, he never gave up. He embraced fitness as a cornerstone of his recovery, competing in triathlons, marathons, and other distance races. He even ran races with a 40-pound pack on his back, a symbolic weight to honor the comrades who never returned home.

Anthony was more than a runner; he was one of the most loyal friends you could ever know, always there for others, even when it was difficult. He fought tirelessly for his sobriety, seeking help through multiple treatments at IBH, the VA, and numerous halfway houses.

This race, the first annual Anthony Salem 5K, is dedicated to him and his unwavering spirit. We aim to help others find the same healing and strength Anthony discovered through fitness, especially those battling addiction and military trauma.

All proceeds from this race will directly benefit Running2BWell groups, which meet at IBH treatment center, Running2BWell Akron running groups, and Grafton Prison. Running2BWell has already made an incredible impact, distributing nearly 500 pairs of running shoes to these programs in 2024. Our goal is to support Running2BWell mission: to provide fitness opportunities for healing to those in our community who need it most.

We need your help to make this vision a reality. Your donation will directly contribute to providing vital resources and a path to recovery for veterans and individuals struggling with addiction. Please consider supporting this cause by donating at the link below.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping us honor Anthony's legacy.
