On July 12, I will be taking on the Triple Bypass Ride, a 118-mile (190 km) cycling challenge through the Rocky Mountains, climbing over 10,800 feet (3,291 m) across three mountain passes: Juniper, Loveland, and Vail. This isn’t just a test of endurance—it’s a mission to raise funds for the American Cancer Society in honor of the people in my life who are battling cancer.

Last October, my girlfriend Michelle Griffith and my sister-in-law Bethea Jackson were both diagnosed with breast cancer. Their strength, resilience, and courage in facing this disease have deeply inspired me, and I’ll be riding in their honor. Cancer touches so many lives, and I want to do my part to support ongoing research, patient care, and support services.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a frightening experience, but today, thanks to advancements in research and treatment, survival rates are improving. Twenty years ago, when I left cancer research, some of the treatments that are now saving lives didn’t even exist. In the U.S., the cancer mortality rate has dropped by 34% since its peak in 1991due to advances in treatment, early detection, and lifestyle changes. Over the past decade alone (2013–2022), the cancer death rate has dropped by 1.7% per year - evidence that research is making a difference.

Inspired by Michelle and Bethea, as well as friends and family who have faced colon cancer, liver cancer, lymphoma, and MGUS, and following the example of my hero Terry Fox, I want to do what I can to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and support services.
