Why I started this: Kenya Johnson, Founder:
I began my advocacy journey 17 years ago after a tragic incident that forever changed my family’s life. My sister was shot in the hand while celebrating her daughter’s 16th birthday party—a moment that was supposed to be filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Instead, it turned into a heartbreaking and traumatic experience that none of us will ever forget.
The situation began when some individuals who were not invited to the celebration were asked to leave the venue. Unfortunately, instead of simply leaving, they returned with violence in their hearts. They came back and began shooting, turning what should have been a beautiful celebration into a scene of chaos and fear.
Thankfully, two of the young men involved were quickly apprehended by an off-duty police officer and the security guard who were on site. However, the damage had already been done.
As a result of that senseless act of gun violence, my sister was left permanently disabled. She no longer has the ability to use her right hand, and her life was changed in ways that words cannot fully express.
That moment became a turning point for me. Watching someone you love suffer from such a preventable act of violence ignites something deep inside of you. My sister is the reason I continue to fight every day to help end gun violence and bring awareness to the devastating impact it has on families and communities.
What started as pain has grown into purpose. My advocacy is rooted in love for my family, my community, and for every person who deserves to live in a world where celebrations are not interrupted by violence.
