The Thomas E. Smith Foundation Courage Classic is the product of one of the most inspirational people I have ever met, Tom Smith. I first got to work with Tom while I was in the Governor's office under Charlie Baker, and Tom was advocating for something called the look-up line. We hit it off at our first meeting as he told me about his journey through hockey and life that led to his passionate advocacy for not just hockey safety, but for the growth of youth development within the game. Fast forward, I found myself beaming with pride as we stepped on to the ice at Murphy Rink in South Boston, along with Governor Baker, to announce that all state run rinks will now have look-up lines installed as a policy. If even just one spinal cord injury is prevented from the work that Tom did on this policy- and I simply facilitated- I will look back on that day with a smile for years to come. This is the Tom Smith that I got to know, and this is the reason that will never say no to a cause that Tom is behind. He puts his money where his mouth is, and the Courage Classic is the just the latest example. I ask for your support in this endeavor, anything you can give, because the cause is just, and more importantly the man behind the cause is the real deal.
