Since 2011, the Insurance Resource Center (IRC) for Autism and Behavioral Health at UMass Chan Medical School’s E.K. Shriver Center has been a trusted lifeline for families navigating the complexities of health insurance. While most families we serve have some form of coverage, many face significant gaps—services that aren’t covered, confusing requirements, and large out-of-pocket costs—especially when dealing with autism and behavioral health needs.

We support individuals, families, and providers navigating the complex process of accessing autism and behavioral health services through insurance—including private insurance, MassHealth, and Medicare. Our team helps people understand their coverage options and assists with everything from paperwork to advocacy.

Earlier this year, one parent shared their experience with us:
"I reached out to [The IRC] after getting their information from a friend. I was feeling so defeated trying to get help with MassHealth coverage for my daughter with autism. I had employees tell me she wasn't 'autistic enough' to qualify. [The IRC] listened to everything I had been through and explained clearly how I could get her MassHealth as secondary insurance, along with premium assistance. They helped with the paperwork and outreach—I couldn’t be more grateful”.

We’re excited to be part of the Flutie 5K again this year! The funds we raise help us continue this important work for the many families who reach out to us every day. While much of our work happens over the phone or Zoom, the Flutie 5K gives us a special chance to connect in person with the families and organizations we've supported. It's a meaningful community event we look forward to every year.
