Our team is walking in honor and memory of 2nd Grade Detective Leonard D. Cocco, a 9/11 first responder whose courage, service, and heart continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
On September 11, 2001, Detective Cocco answered the call to help. In the months that followed, he continued serving as part of the recovery efforts at Ground Zero. Like so many first responders, the impact of that day did not end when he left the site. Years later, he became ill as a result of his exposure during those recovery efforts, and on June 12, 2020, he lost his life to his 9/11-related illness.
But 9/11 and his illness are only a small part of his story.
Lenny had the biggest heart. Helping people wasn't something he only did because he wore a badge, it was simply who he was. If someone was in need, he was there. He dedicated his life to protecting others, taking care of people, and doing whatever he could to make someone's life a little better.
His loss left a space that can never be filled, but his legacy continues through his family, friends, fellow officers, and the countless lives he touched.
Participating in the Tunnel to Towers 5K is incredibly meaningful to our team. Every step we take is in his honor. We walk to remember his courage, his sacrifice, his kindness, and the countless first responders whose sacrifices continued long after September 11th.
We also walk so that Tunnel to Towers can continue supporting the heroes and families who have sacrificed so much in service to others.
If you choose to support our team, please know that your donation means more than helping us reach a fundraising goal. It is a way of helping us carry 2nd Grade Detective Leonard D. Cocco's legacy forward while supporting other heroes and their families in his honor.
This walk is for Lenny. For his service. For his sacrifice. For the incredible heart behind the badge.
We walk in his footsteps. We carry his legacy. We never forget.
