Melanoma is the deadliest and fastest growing form of skin cancer and we all want a cure to be found soon. The Atlanta Miles for Melanoma 5K is a way for people to come together to take action and help support this fight and the mission of the Melanoma Research Foundation.
Jamie's fight with melanoma began with a quarter-sized spot on his back, observed by me, his wife, in the Fall of 2022. After its successful removal and two years of clean semi-annual exams, we found in August of 2024 that it had metastasized to his left axillary lymph nodes. Despite following the current protocols for treatment, including immunotherapy and surgery to remove the lymph node, the cancer metastasized further and was found in his lungs at the beginning of November. Jamie died at home, November 30th, 2024.
Remembering Jamie's painful journey reminds us that every step matters and every step counts. Significant advancement has been made in the past few years in improved melanoma detection, new drug treatments and better survival rates. This progress has been built on the breakthroughs made fighting other types of cancers, as well as the existing foundation of melanoma research.
There is more to be done and a long way to go, but the finish line is in sight. The energy, enthusiasm and encouragement from patients, survivors, families, friends, caregivers, and the medical community impacts many lives and many futures.
