Why support the African Penguins of Cameron Park Zoo?
Standing between twenty-four to twenty-eight inches tall and weighing anywhere from 4.9 to 11 pounds, African black-footed penguins are the sole representatives of their species on the southern tip of South Africa. Adorned with distinctive black stripes and spots on their chests, each penguin sports a unique pattern akin to human fingerprints.
These endearing creatures face a grim reality in the wild. Recent reports from the BBC reveal that the wild population of African penguins is dwindling by a staggering 8% annual rate, with a decline of over 99% in the past century. Without immediate intervention, this beloved species could vanish by 2035.
The penguins at Cameron Park Zoo help ensure the promise of a brighter future - one where humans and wildlife coexist harmoniously, ensuring that future generations can marvel at the beauty of these remarkable creatures.
Cameron Park Zoological and Botanical Society is the non-profit side of the Zoo. The Society allows the Zoo to function as a 501 c 3 organization, capable of accepting tax deductible donations. Donors are very important to the Cameron Park Zoo’s education and animal care programs, our AZA field projects, and the Zoo’s local and international conservation initiatives.
