Richard was hired at NASA GSFC in 1996. While there he had amazing coworkers and one in particular introduced Rich to running. When I met Rich, he was training for the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC. I began running with him and from there we entered 5k's and even a 10 miler. Soon after, in 1998 we were married and had children. Running took a backseat to life. In 2001 we moved to Ohio, Rich's home state and he was transferred to Glenn Research Center. Then, in 2012, we signed up for a Half Marathon and began running and training once again. From then on, we ran races in many places; Florida, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, and even in the Bahamas. So many wonderful memories! As the kids got older, they ran too. Many of those races had 5 Slywczak participants :-) It's been a family activity over the years.
Rich worked at GRC until his passing in October, 2022 from cancer.
We run this race, at a NASA facility, the organization where he spent his career and to raise funds the American Cancer Society. We run for him. We run to continue the hope, that one day, cancer will be a disease of the past. More understood, more cures, more prevention and more survivors!
The money our team raises helps the American Cancer Society in so many ways. It's helping fund innovative research. It's providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It's providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives.
