From Jen:
I never post fundraisers, but I am making an exception for this worthy cause. Care and assistance like this for brain injured adults can be hard to come by. It is especially difficult for someone such as George, who is also completely blind. Sue and I will be walking the mile with our brother George for the 2nd year in this event. Our brother was in a car accident at the age of 18 on August 11 of 1989, 4 days before he was due to leave for the University of Miami . The fact that George even survived this accident is a miracle, and has changed his and our family's lives forever. He was left with a traumatic right sided brain injury and complete blindness with extensive damage to his eyes. Incapable of working or living on his own at the young age of 18, when young adulthood is just starting out, George was cared for by our mom who passed in 2007 and then by our dad who we lost in 2021. After having lived for 3 years in a studio that my parents had added on to Sue's house in Scituate, it was time to help George find more independence, activity, and socialization. Finding the Douglas House in Lexington MA was a godsend after exhaustive searches for a living arrangement that could help an older adult like George who was living with both a brain injury and blindness. And, it seemed meant to be...it so happens that the Douglas house is 0.3 miles from the childhood home that our dear mother had lived in, on Oakland Street in Lexington. We are convinced our mom had a hand in that. In his two years at Douglas House, George has made friends of fellow residents and the college interns who guide him through his Neuro-Fit program exercises in the gym. It has been a social outlet as well as exercise for George, and the benefits for all residents who use the program are invaluable. We cannot ever cure George's blindness, but the brain has an enormous capacity to recover and heal with the right care and resources, and Neuro-Fit provides that for their residents, allowing them a little more independence, support, and success in their lives living with brain injury, stroke, and other neurological disorders. Thank you Douglas House, Neuro-Fit, and SLI (Supportive Living, Inc)! George, Sue, and Jen
