Seattle Children's is having its annual Run of Hope! This year I'm excited to participate and am asking friends and family to consider donating to a special cause if able!
I've worked at Seattle Children's Research Institute for the past year and have seen the direct impact our work has on children and their families. I've talked to parents who thought they were out of options. I've talked to siblings who are so thankful to have their sibling healthy just so they can play again. And it's not just these individual impacts.
Many labs in our building are working on research that could change the face of cancer treatment. My lab specifically, is using epigenetics to develop less toxic and targeted chemotherapies. Academic research like this is so, so necessary for our communities. Our current administration has decided to defund this important, lifesaving work. This means research like mine will grind to a halt and only companies who are privately funded (by private interests) will remain afloat.
It is our duty to each other as humans, to keep each other safe and healthy. If you can contribute, thank you! If you can't, no worries times are hard!! But please, please continue to push your representatives in office to do what is right.
If you have questions about research, the economic impacts of publicly funded science, or any other related questions - feel free to reach out!
