We are proud to support Selfhelp by participating in Leo’s 5k run on November 22nd
My great-grandfather Harry was a Holocaust survivor from Poland. He lost most of his family and friends and immigrated to North America, without money or possessions, after the war to find safety and start a new life. He was a trained tailor from the old country and was able to use these skills to make a living for himself and his family. Unfortunately, many other survivors weren’t able to provide a stable income to support themselves and their loved ones.
About 12,500 Holocaust survivors live in the New York metropolitan area today. The majority can be classified as "very poor" or "near poor," are an average of 90 years of age, and growing frail. For my mitzvah project, I will be hosting a 5 kilometer run around Prospect Park in order to raise money that will help NYC-based survivors in need. To achieve this, I have set up a web page that allows you to donate money and create a fundraising page of your own in support of this cause. All proceeds will go to Selfhelp Community Services’ Holocaust Survivor Program.
Please note that my fundraising page will remain open until the event on November 22nd (even though Selfhelp’s own event ended on November 2nd). For those of you who are NY-based, we hope you can join us on the 22nd and we will be in touch regarding details of the event.
Thank you!
