At La Rabida, we know that children with sickle cell disease have special needs that require treatment and support from a range of specialists. That’s why our team consists of a pediatric board-certified doctor who specializes in diseases of the blood (hematologist), a pediatric nurse practitioner, a child psychologist and a licensed social worker.
Together, the team provides inpatient and outpatient treatment, urgent treatment, disease management strategies, genetic counseling, parent and family education, as well as services from a social worker and psychologist. We work closely with children and their families to create a custom treatment plan that may include regular check-ups and surveillance, medication (such as Hydroxyurea), blood transfusions and stem cell transplants.
