Join our team to fundraise for Project C.U.R.E.! Since the war broke out in Tigray on the border of Ethiopia, health facilities have been targeted and looted. Shire Hospital is one of the very few health facilities still operating. According to Selam, a young woman now living in Nashville who is passionate about helping the people of Tigray,
"On November 4th of 2020, a war broke out in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, leaving millions of Tigray people displaced across neighboring countries and regions. Not only have the Tigray people been affected, but refugee camps in Tigray housing Eritrean refugees were caught in the crossfire, leaving thousands unaccounted for.
The power vacuum in Tigray has created an opportunity for soldiers to exploit women's vulnerability, as there is no one to hold them accountable. Since the conflict, women in Tigray have been victims of horrific sexual violence, used as a tool for warfare and forced subjugation on the community of Tigray. Cases of STDs and pregnancies due to rape are rampant as a result of this inhumane sexual violence; meanwhile, hospitals have been destroyed, and medical supplies looted, leaving the people of Tigray without any resources to recover from this violent conflict.
What is happening to the people of Tigray can only be described as genocide. The UN estimates over two million civilians have been displaced, and thousands of people have been killed. US officials have likened these atrocities to “ethnic cleansing”.
Due to the conflict, rape and death has become part of the people of Tigray’s everyday life. At the same time, because of travel restrictions and limited access to humanitarian aid, people in Tigray are experiencing a severe shortage of food, clean water, and medicine. The conflation of these factors means Tigray cannot work on community healing and aid in response to continuous acts of sexual violence and deadly attacks."
