Description
Come ring in the New Year with your favorite jackasses! We’ll be celebrating the New Year in good fashion with the best long ears and their people! We’re excited to offer two new race options, solo runners and ghost runners! 🥳

Tuesday, December 31st:

Appetizers, dinner, and dessert to be served as we ring in the New Year!

Treasure Hunt after dark, seek hidden treasures with glow sticks in them. Prizes and burro treats in every treasure.

Entry into any run distance makes you eligible to participate. One person one burro. No helpers allowed. Separate liability release will be required.

Wednesday, January 1:

5k and 10k Burro Races with On Trail Costume Contest. Solo and ghost runners are welcome on both distances.

Costume contest is Fairytale themed with a $20 entry fee. Winner takes all!

Breakfast and potluck lunch will be served before and after the races!
Introducing:
Ghost Runners
Can't make it to Wickenburg? No problem! Sign up as a ghost runner and still be part of the fun! With sign up you'll receive a swag bag and get a race number assigned to a participating donkey! This option will be available for both distances.
Solo Runners
Don’t have a donkey to run with? Not quite ready to run with a donkey but want to experience it? Also not a problem! We’re very excited to offer a solo runner option. Come join the fun and experience the love of long ears!
Check in will be Wednesday morning, 8a-9a. ALL BURROS MUST BE CHECKED IN BY 9 AM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Rules:

$50 per entry, burro + handler, solo runners, and ghost runners.

Pack saddles are optional on both distances.

In order to be eligible for awards, if you become separated from your burro, you must return to the place you became separated and start again.

Youth of all ages are encouraged to participate. First time youth and adults that need family assistance can only enter the 5k fun run and are asked to start at the back of the start pack and will not be eligible for awards (you can’t win a prize if you have a helper pushing your burro).

Jack chains are allowed, but misuse is not.

Burros/Donkeys only!

Awards will be given for first and second place finishers in each distance. Trail will be monitored by game camera.

Boyd Ranch

From Wickenburg: Take hwy 93 north 4.5 miles to Scenic loop road east or right on the roundabout. There is a large U-Haul building on the corner. Stay on scenic loop road 8 miles. It's mostly maintained dirt road. Signs to Boyd ranch but it is essentially at the end of scenic loop road.
From Prescott or Kingman: Traveling South on Hwy 93 make a left on to Scenic Loop Dr at mile marker 195. This is shortly after the round-about at Wickenburg Ranch. From here follow directions above.

CAMPING
Camping will be at Boyd Ranch where we will have access to primitive camping, water and bathrooms, included with your entry fee. Everyone is welcome to come camp with your burro Tuesday, December 31st - January 2nd. Camping is first come, first serve. There are pens available for an additional fee, please contact Kim at Boyd Ranch to arrange, if desired. Campfires are allowed in elevated pits, bring your smores! Dinner Tuesday, breakfast and potluck lunch on Wednesday, donations encouraged and please bring your own drink container/cup. Bring your own snacks for in between meals.
Things to note:

Pens are $30/event self-clean. Pile manure 5' outside of pen towards road for tractor access. Cash box available or you can pay Kim at Boyd Ranch directly.

Dogs allowed, must be on leash and pick up after them in camp.

No smoking in buildings.

Report facility difficulties immediately.

Fires in elevated pits only.
Renting a Burro:
We DO NOT rent burros through this race. You must have prior arrangements in place to have a donkey for your use if you want to participate with a burro. We have a couple of rescues who often bring burros to races throughout the state, although, you need to make arrangements with those rescues ASAP. Please contact Oatman Burros or Forever Home Donkey Sanctuary to arrange a burro rental! If any other rescues will be joining, their information will be posted here.
Participant Waivers/Release of Liability
All participants, in any event being held during 2024-2025 New Year Burro Bash participate at their own risk. No town, county, or private property owners along the course, sponsoring businesses, governmental agencies, persons, volunteers, race officials, or organizations will be liable in case of accident or injury to the runner or burro. Each runner must sign a waiver and/or release of responsibility before they race.
”Arizona, as well as many other states, have enacted legislation to protect those in the equine industry from liability if a participant suffers an injury or death from an inherent risk of an equine-related activity. Arizona’s Equine Limited Liability statute provides an equine owner is not liable for injury or death if: (1) the participant took control of the equine prior to injury or death; (2) if the participant or the parent or legal guardian of a minor participant signed a release before taking control of the equine; (3) if the owner or agent has properly installed suitable tack or the participant personally tacked the equine with tack provided by the owner or agent of the equine; or (4) the owner or agent assigns a suitable equine based on a reasonable interpretation of the participant’s representation of his or her skills, health and experience with and knowledge of equines. A.R.S. § 12-553(A).
