Memorial Day Recognition - Louie Pompei (Aug 1964 - June 1995)

The Glendora Memorial Day 5k is pleased to honor and commemorate those who sacrificed everything for their community and country. This is our first year highlighting and recognizing such persons, and there is no better or fitting person than Glendora's own Louie Pompei, whose life ended prematurely on June 9, 1995. This year marks 30 years from his tragic and untimely passing. We are honored to recognize and have this year's race be a tribute to his life and memory.

Louie was hired as a Police Officer trainee by the Glendora Police Department on October 12, 1987. He worked in various positions, including in the Detective Division as a narcotics investigator from 1992-1995. Louie was a physical fitness buff, and body builder, who worked hard to stay in shape. He competed with officers from all over the state in the California Police Olympics, earning a silver medal in a bodybuilding competition in 1994. He was also an avid runner participating in the Baker to Vegas, 120 mile running relay race.

On June 9, 1995, Louie was shot and killed while attempting to stop an armed robbery takeover at a Vons Market in Via Verde. He was loyal to the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, which states in pertinent part, “As a law enforcement officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind; safeguard lives and property; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence or disorder…”  This was Louie at his best, upholding the ideals of protecting those who could not protect themselves.

We appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Glendora Police Department to honor of their own, and a hero of the Glendora community, at this year's race.
