The Dip & Dash Aquathlon is a swim - run event. Think triathlon without the bike! There are three individual distances for the event and a team challenge category for teams of 3. The three individual distances are: 350m swim and 2k run (1.25 miles), 750m swim and 4 mile run, or 1500m swim and 4 mile run.
Based on feedback from last year, the team challenge will be re-structured for 2020 - Each distance will have an optional team component where teams can compete against each other for the fastest overall team times. Unlike last year's mixed team format, ALL team members will start together for each distance and the team with the shortest cumulative time will win. For example a group, family, or club can create one or more "teams" who would compete for the lowest overall score. We will do an award in each distance for the fastest all male and female teams and one for the fastest mixed team. The catch is that you have to create your team and declare that team at the time of registration, or prior to the race. No fair deciding on race morning to join a "team" because you've sized up the competition. So choose your teams for fun or competition. All team members do the same distance event (this eliminates the having to tag off like last year, and keeps all the swimmers in a group rather than one or two swimmers alone in the water). During registration you will be given the option of creating a team, giving it a name, etc. Just log on as a normal registration, select your preferred distance, create your team and proceed to registration.
There are three distances of swim-run events for this race.
We're taking a page from the triathlon super-sprint mixed team relay format.
Teams of three participants can compete in the Team Challenge Relay races - on the shortest distance event (350m swim and 2 k run). Unlike traditional triathlon relays, each member of these teams will complete both the swim and run segments before tagging off to the next team member.
Teams will be structured as follows:
The team with the lowest overall time in each category will win. This is a great opportunity for clubs and or family/friends groups to compete together in a fast paced and spectator friendly team event.
All packet pickup and on-site registration will take place at the Cowell Beach parking lot adjacent to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf starting at 7:00 am. This is also transition for the event so the lot will be totally closed to parking or drive through. The best place to park is in Depot Park at 119 Center Street - about a block up from the beach behind the National Marine Sanctuary Center.
Remember to bring a photo ID to packet pickup to get your bib and timing chip. You must be present to pick up your own race materials.
