Description

Sloan's Lake Search Party (SLSP) Marathon!

WELCOME TO THE 2ND ANNUAL SLSP!

THE SUMMARY

Did you know that the loop around Sloan's Lake in Denver Colorado is almost perfectly 2.62 miles around? Join us as we go around the lake every hour on the hour for 10 hours to complete a full Marathon!
Everyone will start at the same time and will have 1 hour to complete the loop around the lake. You can run, walk, crawl as long as you make it back and check-in within an hour. Though the sooner you finish the sooner you can hang out at the basecamp with friends, family, food, and fun! This is unlike most other races where your support squad may only see you sweat past them for a brief second or two as they wave smartass handmade signs and you work up the energy for a quick smile for their support (but won't slow down because you're going for a PR!). Instead you will get to see them at least every hour after you complete a loop! This makes for a very unique and shared experience! Interested? Sign-up today!

THE SEARCH

Why is this called a search? That is the other thing that makes this an even more unusual event. There have allegedly been recent reports of a mythical creature roaming around the lake. Something with the head of a goose and body of bigfoot that we now know as "Goosifer, the Sloan's Lake Monster" aka the "Colfax Creature." Every hour when we go around the lake we will try see if we we can spot the creature who is known to lurk in the shadows of the trees and shallows of the water (new surprises expected this year!). Each participant will then need to check-in at basecamp after every search around the lake, for safety purposes of course.
Ground Rules
  • The entire group will leave basecamp together at the beginning of every hour
  • Each participant will need to complete a full search (loop) around the lake (approx 2.62 miles)
  • Each participant will need to return back to basecamp within an hour and check-in with an organizer
  • Each participant will complete 10 full loops around the lake (approx 26.2 miles) over 10 hours

Note: We are no longer doing the half-marathon...it was just too much for the lowly race director to track and keep up with. Sorry!

THE PARTY!

The race will begin and end at basecamp. This is where each participant will sign-in to start and check-in every hour. This is also where friends, family, and fun will be abundant! There will be water, coffee, some sustenance, and other surprises at basecamp; however, participants must be radically self-reliant! At the end we will celebrate a long day of searching around the lake. Everyone who successfully completes the search will be rewarded and the top search participants will be recognized for their hard work! Bonus points if you spot the creature!
Here are some things to bring to the party:
  • Appropriate attire for all weather conditions and layers keeping in mind you'll likely be out there from sunrise to sunset!
  • Nutrition and electrolytes to keep you going strong (2023 was HOT)!
  • A headlamp or flashlight for the start and end of the search (and to help spot the creature)!
  • Shelter (pop-up tents) so you can be protected from the elements throughout the long day!
  • DO BRING friends, family, and any goods that will make this an amazing and memorable day!
  • DO BRING a great attitude and respect for Sloan's Lake Park and its friendly neighbors!
  • DO NOT BRING any weapons or anything else that could get yourself or others hurt!
