2021 Cal Tri Lake Monticello - 5.2.21

Sun May 2, 2021 Charlottesville, VA 22963 US Directions

Will the race be "wetsuit legal"?  Yes, the forecasted water temperature is 65.  A wetsuit is recommended if the water temperature is between 58-65 degrees.  Need a wetsuit?  We recommend Blueseventy.  Save 20% with the CALTRI discount code.

Can I wear headphones during the race?  Run?  No.  It is not safe because it could prevent you from hearing other athletes near you or directions from volunteers and staff.

Is there Saturday and Sunday packet pickup?  Does that include Saturday Courtesy Bike Drop-Off?  Yes.  There is both Saturday, 1-3 PM, packet pickup and Sunday morning packet pickup at the Lake Monticello Club House.  Only the athlete can pickup their registration materials.  Not a friend, spouse, coworker or relay team member.  Athletes may also utilize Courtesy Bike Drop-Off on Saturday at 1-3 PM after they receive their packet.  This is not required but is highly encouraged if schedules permit.

What is Sunday's race schedule?  LINK

What is the parking situation like?  The Lake Monticello Club House at 41 Ashlawn Boulevard, Charlottesville, VA US 22963 is your destination on race morning.  Lake Monticello is a gated community.  The main gate is at 857 Jefferson Dr, Palmyra, VA 22963.  Be prepared to show ID to staff checking the guest list.  Only athletes, volunteers and staff will be admitted.  After entering, there is street parking in designated areas.  Additionally, there is offsite parking at Crofton Plaza at 101 Crofton Plaza, Palmyra, VA 22963.  (Do not park at BP or Fluvanna Hardware Store)

When should athletes arrive at the race venue? Depart?  Athletes should arrive no earlier than 1 hour before their event begins and depart fairly soon after finishing the race.  Please consult the schedule for arrival and start times.

  • Sprint Event Athletes - 7 AM Arrival (8 AM race start)
  • 70.3-Mile Event Athletes - 7:20 AM Arrival (8:20 AM race start)
  • Olympic Event Athletes - 9:30 AM Arrival (10:30 AM race start)

Athletes should depart soon after finishing the race with the exception of Top 3 overall event finishers from the 18 events who have the option of staying for a short, socially-distanced award ceremony.

What should I expect from a "socially distanced" race?  World Triathlon COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines for Event Organizers guidelines combined with those from the state and local agencies will be in effect.  We are bending over backwards to give this race the best possible chance of happening.  Athlete precautions include:

  • Expanded Transition Areas.  A doubling of the transition area and only 2 or 3 athletes per rack
  • A Modified Race Schedule.  Sprint & 70.3-mile athletes will start early in the morning and Olympic athletes will start mid-morning.
  • Temperature Screening.  Temperature check prior to packet pickup.
  • Streamlined Packet Pickup.  All materials including the finisher medal provided before the race.
  • Seeded Rolling Swim Starts.  This format is a standard for Cal Tri Events races but seems particularly useful this year.
  • Mask Usage.  Mask usage first thing in the morning until athletes enter the water.  Masks will be provided to athletes at the finish line.  Masks are standard issue for volunteers, staff and anyone else associated with the race.
  • Sparse Aid Stations.  Bottled water and assorted Spring Energy gels will be provided on the run course by a limited number of volunteers.  Please plan accordingly.

Should I bring my cheering section?  Sadly, not for 2021.  Please explain to your friends and family that we need to minimize the impact on the Lake Monticello community and participation is exclusively athletes, volunteers and staff.

What if my travel partner and I are racing at two different times?  One solution is that the athlete with the later start time can drop the athlete with the earlier start time off at Crofton Plaza at 101 Crofton Plaza, Palmyra, VA 22963 and both can utilize that location during the day.  Another solution is to switch to similar event distance (sprint, Olympic, 70.3-mile).

What will the bathroom situation look like?  As always, portable toilets will be available.  Disinfectant wipes and solution will be available to wipe door handles, toilet handles, bathroom faucet handles, etc.  Race staff will clean bathrooms several times during the day.

How will the award ceremonies be conducted?  Top 3 overall awards ceremonies for each event (M/F) will be conducted.  Please consult the race day schedule for times.  Athletes will be required to wear masks and we will maintain 6' of distance.  Note:  Cal Tri Events races do not include age group award event ceremonies.  With 18 events and up to 20 age groups it isn't practical due to time constraints.  All Cal Tri Events participants are eligible for pride and prizes in the Grand Prix USA.

What is the standard Cal Tri Events refund policy?  Covid-19 policy?  The standard policy is there are no refunds, deferrals, or transfers.  If the race is postponed due to Covid-19, athletes will be deferred to the rescheduled date (typically the following year). Additionally, athletes have the right to transfer to another Cal Tri Events race and upgrade to any event.

When is the 2021 Cal Tri Lake Monticello - 5.2.21 deadline to defer to 2022?  March 1, 2021.  Follow the instructions HERE.  We understand some athletes would prefer to skip the race this year due to a myriad of reasons.  Athletes have until March 1st to defer and no reason is necessary.
