The 2020 Capitol Hill Classic has been POSTPONED until Fall 2020 due to COVID-19

New Date: TBD

Unfortunately, we have had to make the tough decision to postpone the 2020 Capitol Hill Classic. We are currently working out the details with all the permitting agencies we need to work with on this race, and our intention is to announce a new date in fall 2020 as soon as we can, hopefully within the next two to four weeks.

The looming reality is that COVID-19 is going to continue to affect daily life in Washington, DC, and in America, well into May. The best epidemiological minds we have consulted tell us that it's a near-certainty that DC will still be urging avoidance of public gatherings well into the spring. Given the costs we will begin to assume this month were we to try to put on a May race, we would run the risk of costing the Capitol Hill Cluster School money if the race ended up having to be cancelled. Additionally, the race is put on entirely by parent volunteers, most of whom are now facing figuring out how to work while taking care of children who are no longer in school; it's hard to imagine us being able to devote the time to making this race the event that our community (and we) expect it to be.

If you have already registered for this year's May race, then we are offering you three options:

  • simply roll your registration into the fall race (and understand that if, once we announce the fall date, the date won't work for you, we'll happily entertain you switching to another option);
  • donate your registration fee to the Capitol Hill Cluster School;
  • request a refund from us.

If you choose to do nothing at this time, then that's the equivalent of the first option — the race registration system already has your information, and there's really nothing more you need to do. If you would like to specify which option you'd like to elect, then use the form below to make your choice. Note that we then will be running reports daily to handle manually processing your choices; it's not an automated system, so please be patient while we process your choice.

Finally, please note that this was an incredibly difficult decision for us to make. This race is an event that we put on because we love it, we love our childrens' schools, and we love bringing runners to Capitol Hill in the spring to experience a unique course that has been run for over 40 years. Mid-May might come with less COVID-19-related disruptions than are currently looming, and we might look foolish for making this decision. But honestly, we'd rather that be the case — and will happily take our lumps for looking foolish — than the inverse, trying to put on the 2020 Capitol Hill Classic in May in the setting of major COVID-19 disruptions, and being the source of immense burden on the Washington, DC region.

Thank you for your understanding, and we hope you will join us for the first (and only, hopefuly!) fall 2020 Capitol Hill Classic. Keep an eye on our website, and your email, for announcements once we've firmed up a date.

Here Are Your Options:

We will transfer your registration to the new event date once it is set, and look forward to having you join us; you will receive verification of the transfer as soon as it occurs. Thanks for your patience!

You understand that events are expensive, even when cancelled, and you want us to keep your registration fees to help cover our costs and contribute to the Capitol Hill Cluster School. We deeply appreciate your generosity, we are incredibly thankful that you're willing to put your faith in us, and we look forward to seeing you at a future Capitol Hill Classic.

We understand, we honestly do. We're incredibly disappointed that we can't bring you to Stanton Park to toe the starting line in May. We hope you will consider joining us in the fall.

What do you get?

For the cost of your registration, you'll run on a USATF-certified course, and you'll receive your bib, your timing chip, a technical race T-shirt, and plenty of snacks and water at the finish line. There is a free bike valet at the start and finish line, and the amazing women of Batala Washington will drum you through the middle of the 10K course.

The Capitol Hill Classic 10K race is a major annual fundraiser for the Capitol Hill Cluster School, a DC public school with over 1,100 students. This will be the 41st annual running of the Classic, which includes a 10K race , a 3K race and a kids’ fun run and is the only race run exclusively on the roads of Capitol Hill. Approximately 4,500 people are expected to participate in the Classic.

The course for the 10K starts out in front of Peabody Primary School a few blocks from the US Capitol. Runners head west around the corner of Stanton Park and then straight to the Capitol. The course continues between the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress before turning east and then heading up to the tree-lined canopies along East Capitol Street. Runners continue along East Capitol around Lincoln Park to RFK Stadium, and then onto the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. After a circle along the trail, runners head back in along East Capitol to return to the finish at Peabody.

The 3K course starts out in front of Peabody Primary School, heading west around the corner of Stanton Park before turning down to East Capitol Street. Runners continue in the shade of East Capitol to Lincoln Park before turning around and heading back to Peabody for the finish.

The Fun Run is a single lap around Stanton Park (approximately a third of a mile).
