4-PERSON RELAY COURSE

The Delaware 4-Person Relay will utilize the same course as the Marathon. The route will continue to run through some of the most scenic parts of downtown Wilmington.  Route changes implemented in 2019 will continue, unifying the full, half and team relay courses so everyone uses the same routes for the first 13 miles. The 2nd half of the full marathon course will run along the Jack Markell Trail to New Castle Elementary School and back.  The paved and boardwalk trail will offer some amazing scenery and will be stocked with 3 water stops and port-a-pots where access permits.  We are looking to add some new features to the trail in terms of entertainment and shade.  Details to come!

Course is subject to change at any time. Last update 9/14/2019.

WATER STATIONS

The course will consist of 14 water stops including 2 that you will pass in each in each direction on the Markell Trail and one at the turnaround at New Castle Elementary School.  Due to limited access points on the trail, we will offer full bottles of water at the stop at Mile 14.5, just at the mouth of the trail entrance.  This will allow marathon runners to carry a full bottle to supplement their hydration while on the trail.  Feel free to bring your own hydration system (such as a camelbak) if you prefer or to refill your bottle at the other water stations along the trail.

Each water station will also offer port-a-pots for runner use.  On the trail where you will pass them in each direction, we will offer additional units to alleviate congestion.

RELAY LOGISTICS

The relay consists of 4 legs.  The relay exchanges will occur in several locations along the marathon route. Some runners will be bused to and from their exchange location;  Others will start or finish near the Celebration Village and walk less than 1/2 mile to/from their exchange.  Each runner will wear their own race bib but all team members will have the same number.  A fifth bib will be issued with the timing chip affixed to pass between members at the relay exchange point in order to track the team’s time out on the race route.  Timing mats may be located just before or just after the exchange area to provide a time to each leg of the relay.

EXCHANGE TIPS

Know your teammate’s pace, keep track of the race time, and know when to expect him/her.

How It Works

Each relay team will be issued four bibs with an identical number and ONE D-Tag and a velco strap. Runners are to pass the velcro strap to their teammates at the exchange points. Runners may carry the velcro band in their hand but DO NOT crush or bend the orange D-Tag as this may damage the timing responder.

The first runner (Leg #1) will start at 7:00am along with the marathon and half-marathon field. The other three team members will need to be at their exchange zone well before the fastest runners pass by, as area roads will close. Bus transportation will be provided to designated exchange points (DETAILS ABOVE).

When approaching the exchange point, signs will designate the location of the upcoming exchange point. Upon entering the exchange area, incoming runners should make sure their bib number is visible. A volunteer will announce the incoming runner’s bib number to the waiting runners and signs will mark the bib number ranges.

Each relay runner will pass the Velcro band to the next relay runner at the relay exchange point. Timing mats may be located after the exchange area.
