Comprised of active or retired servicemen and civilian volunteers, Shepherd’s Men enthusiastically raises awareness and funds for the SHARE Military Initiative (SHARE) at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. This nationally renowned program focuses on assessment and treatment for American military veterans who have sustained mild to moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during post-9/11 service. SHARE is the only private program of its kind in the country dedicated to treating our veterans suffering from these injuries and helping them return to health and life with their families.
One in five service men and women who have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan need treatment for debilitating silent injuries of war. Though undetectable visually, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder devastate service members and the families who suffer with them, and they often lead to broken homes and suicide.
A 2012 Department of Defense study found that each day 22 American veterans commit suicide. To symbolize this abhorrent statistic, the Shepherd’s Men team wears 22 pounds of ballistic weight while running. Along the run routes, Shepherd’s Men have met with veteran service organizations, police, firemen, and other local organizations to honor those who have fought for our freedom and bring attention to post-9/11 service members who need treatment.
