The Broome County Urban League (BCUL) is a non-profit organization that has been serving our community since 1968. The BCUL is dedicated to empowering minorities and economically disadvantaged individuals in Broome County, New York. As an affiliate of the National Urban League, BCUL focuses on enabling economic self-reliance, equality, and civil rights.
BCUL offers a variety of programs and services aimed at different age groups and needs:
Youth Support Services: BCUL provides after-school and summer programs, tutoring, mentoring, and technology classes for children and young adults aged 5-21. These initiatives aim to enhance educational outcomes and prepare youth for economic independence. This program also provides these services for children with special needs through a partnership with OPWDD.
Family Support Services: The organization assists families with rent and utility bill support, clothing, food, and housing needs. Since 2018, BCUL has helped over 800 families and individuals through these services. Recently the BCUL has begun a more expansive housing program and is working to build apartments for low to moderate income individuals and families so they can have a safe and affordable place to live.
The Center for Help: This program connects families with various community resources, offering comprehensive referral services to other agencies and private organizations.
Technology Center and ATTAIN Lab: BCUL provides job training and technology certifications through its ATTAIN Technology Lab. Since 2018, more than 1200 individuals have earned certifications, and over 800 have utilized the open lab for resume building and job applications.
Through these programs, the Broome County Urban League strives to ensure that children are well-educated and equipped for economic self-reliance, adults attain economic self-sufficiency, and civil rights are upheld by removing barriers to equal participation in society.
