Starrett Metzler was a Penn Manor High School graduate and current student at Penn State University. He was an athlete at Penn Manor, but succeeded most when it came to his huge smile and endless jokes. He was always the one to shake out any qualms his cross country teammates had by telling a joke or just simply being his goofy self. Thousands of his family and friends were devastated in the spring of 2016, when Starrett took his own life. Many of his close neighborhood friends decided that they did not want to see his name go down in sadness, when Starrett himself, was in fact the complete opposite. As a group, they decided to come up with a 5K in honor and memory of him. Because he was an avid cross country athlete, they thought the best way to go about this was to organize a race on the Penn Manor High School cross country course, where Starrett used to compete. Along with a 5K, there will also be a Metzler mile for kids under the age of 12. It will be a 1 mile course using the first mile of the 5K course. All proceeds from this event will go towards a scholarship in honor and in memory of Starrett Metzler. This scholarship will be awarded to a current Penn Manor High School senior who exhibits the qualities in which Starrett was so profoundly known for, on and off the field and classrooms. It is our hope that Steps for Starrett will further promote suicide awareness throughout our communities.

Where do I park? Parking is limited, so PLEASE CARPOOL IF YOU CAN. You can park at Hambright Elementary or Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Rd, Lancaster, PA 17603. There will also be a satellite parking down the road for which buses will be transporting to and from the race. Satellite parking will be at: Millersville Brethren In Christ Church, 3116 Blue Rock Road, Lancaster

Is there an age limit for runners? Yes. There are two separate runs: The Metzler Mile is for ages 12 and under while the Steps for Starrett 5K race will be for anyone willing to run!

Will Steps for Starrett 5K be held if it is raining? Yes! It will only be cancelled if there is lightning or due to severe weather!

Is the race timed? Yes. Whether walking running, or crawling, you will be timed. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners overall for both male and female runners!

When can I register? Registration will open March 10th, 2017! If registered by May 10th, 2017, you'll be guaranteed your size t-shirt!
