Meet Jaxon Richert: This Year's Honorary Race Starter

For this year’s 5K we want to honor Jaxon. Jaxon is a 4-year-old little boy with a heart of gold and who is smart, funny, and overwhelmingly compassionate to everyone he meets. He is a never-ending ball of energy and loves being silly; he’s not content until everyone in the room is laughing at his many jokes or his contagious laughter. He is a very curious boy who always seeks understanding of what he has seen in the world around him and will stop at nothing for answers to his endless questions. Jaxon loves the “Transformers” and will indulge anyone with great amounts of details if they are patient and willing to listen. His best friend and partner in crime (and sometimes worst enemy) is his older sister Willow. He is also the light of his parent’s lives.

However, In May of 2020, Jaxon accidentally swallowed small rock that he told his parents “looked tasty”. After waiting to see if it would pass, they brought him in for an x-ray. There was no sign of the rock, but after a follow up Ultrasound Jaxon’s doctor informed his parents that they found a small tumor on his adrenal gland. After more testing at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, Jaxon was diagnosed with a rare solid tumor childhood cancer called neuroblastoma. Jaxon immediately underwent surgery to remove the tumor and had numerous scans and biopsies. The surgery was a success; however, the entire family was devastated to learn that there were signs of the cancer in his bone marrow. What followed were several weeks of second opinions and more waiting on what kind of treatments Jaxon would be subjected to. The patience paid off, as the second opinions they consulted with did not believe there were any cancer cells in Jaxon’s bone marrow. Because of this change, Jaxon is now considered to be in remission and will not require invasive chemotherapy or immunotherapy. His treatment plan will consist of frequent scans and tests every few months to ensure there is no recurrence.

The members of the Bend Your Knees foundation would like to say that we are moved by young Jaxon’s story and courage and would like to honor his journey battling cancer into remission by making him the honorary race starter this year.
