Here is more about DYFI:
Since 1989, our non-profit organization has been educating, encouraging, and empowering children and teens living with Type 1 diabetes. The DYFI mission is to help children prepare for life-long success in living with diabetes, and we do this through affordable, safe and developmental camping experiences. Our cornerstone program is a residential camp in Noblesville, Camp Until a Cure. We also have weekend family camps, teen camps, Ambassadors program, and connection outreach events that we offer free to families.
Every summer, over 200 children ages 5-15 from throughout the Midwest come to our camp to swim, hike, explore creeks, and climb high ropes just like any other boy or girl who attends a summer camp. For some children with diabetes this is their first social experience where they don’t feel different from other kids. With a fully staffed camp and medical team on site, one week of overnight camp costs approximately $1,600; however, we only ask families to pay $600 per week for each child, providing additional financial aid to campers who need it. We work with each family individually. Our commitment to the diabetes community, and where your support comes to bear, is that we will not turn a child away from any of our programs due to inability to pay.
One of our newer focuses is supporting the mental, emotional, and social health of each child. While suicide and self harm rates have gone up in youth today, this population has seen an elevated increase due to the stress that this disease causes. We work to equip the youth with skills and build resiliency through intentional programming. One of our new initiatives launching this fall are school diabetes kits. These kits will include a meter, glucose test strips, glucose tabs, glucose gels, single use lancing devices, alcohol swabs, and most importantly, helpful resources about how to truly help youth with diabetes in a school setting.
