I’ve Signed Up. Now What?

Big props to you — you signed up for a virtual 5K, or the Mile Walk & Fun Run. Maybe you wanted a new fitness goal, a reason to get moving, or to make #BlackskyFitness more than a hashtag. Whatever motivated you, congratulations! A virtual race is a flexible, beginner-friendly way for us all to experience the excitement of a race without the pressure of a large crowd or a fixed start line. Now the question becomes: what happens next?

How a Virtual 5K Works

Unlike a traditional race, a virtual 5K allows you to complete the 3.1-mile distance wherever and whenever you choose within a designated event window. Same goes for the Mile, you pick the time, the place, and the pace. Our race window takes place April 1st through the 8th, during that time you will complete their run or walk. Once you finish, you'll have until April 9th to turn in your time.

You pick your location. That could be your neighborhood, a local greenway, a treadmill at the gym, or even laps around the track at your local high school or park. Some participants go solo, while others invite friends or family to join them. As this is a community event, this is a great time to bring your kids or your parents along. After completing the distance, you’ll usually submit your time through through the registration website (more details as we get closer to the big day). You'll be able to download your Finisher's Certificate once you're done.

How to Time Yourself

Timing your virtual race is simple, and you have several options:

  • Smartphone apps such as Strava, MapMyRun, or Nike Run Club automatically track distance and time using GPS.
  • Fitness watches or smartwatches can record your run with even greater accuracy.
  • Manual timing works too. Start a stopwatch when you begin and stop it when you reach 3.1 miles.

Before race day, test whichever method you plan to use. Make sure your app is updated, your device is charged, and you know how to start and stop tracking. A quick practice run can prevent race-day frustration.

Preparing in the Weeks Before

The best way to enjoy your virtual 5K or Fun Run is to prepare gradually. You don’t need to be an experienced runner. You can walk, jog, or combine both.

Four weeks out

Focus on building your base. If you're newer to running, a run/walk interval approach is your best friend. Aim for three runs per week, gradually increasing your distance by no more than 10% each week to avoid injury.

Two to three weeks out

Start incorporating one slightly longer run each week — something in the 2.5 to 3 mile range. This builds confidence and gets your body used to the distance. Don't forget to stretch after every run and stay hydrated throughout the week, not just on run days.

Race week

Ease up. This is called a taper, and it's intentional. Shorter, easy runs will keep your legs fresh without wearing you out before the big effort. Get good sleep, eat well, and trust your training.

Practice race conditions. Try walking or running at the same time of day you plan to complete your virtual race. Wear the shoes and clothing you expect to use so nothing feels unfamiliar. Be sure to test out your method of timing with a short run or walk before race day.

Making Race Day Meaningful

One of the best parts of a virtual race is personalization, make it your own. Create a playlist, invite a friend, or choose a scenic route that motivates you. You can even set up a small finish line at home or plan a celebratory meal afterward.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection — it’s participation. Whether you run the entire distance, alternate between jogging and walking, or simply enjoy moving at your own pace, you are part of a shared experience with your #BlackskyFitness community, and runners and walkers everywhere.

You’ve already taken the hardest step by signing up. Now all that’s left is to prepare, show up for yourself, and cross your own finish line...wherever it may be.
