Description

BEST Kids is a local nonprofit organization working to empower youth in DC's foster care system, one child at a time. 

Join us Saturday May 1, 2021 for our Superhero 5K and Fun Run! Race activities will continue throughout the entire month of May in honor of National Foster Care month.

This year, we will hold our race both in-person and virtually. The in-person race will take place May 1st at East Potomac Park (Hains Point). Social distancing will be enforced.

The virtual race is a race that can be run or walked from any location you choose. You can run, jog, or walk on the road, on a trail, on a treadmill, or on a track. You get to run your race at your own pace and time it yourself, all while being a Superhero! 

The Fun Run distance is 0.5 miles and is geared towards our younger runners. Parents/Guardians should help their smaller Superheroes through the fun run. WE ENCOURAGE ALL RACE PARTICIPANTS TO CONTINUE PRACTICING SOCIAL DISTANCING.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Step 1 – REGISTER for the race

Step 2 – We invite you to download the RunSignUp app where you can keep track of all your race activities.

Step 3 – Show up to Hains Point on May 1st or Complete your race virtually any time between May 1st and May 31st.

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

SHARE our event with your friends and family throughout the DMV area and the country so they too can participate virtually. (NOW – May 31st) Follow on social media at @bestkidsdc for all event details.

CREATE run teams – Creating a team allows you to implement team time goals, or simply empower your friends to remain active during this time of social distancing. Feel free to come up with creative themes and team names. (Now  - May 31st)

PARTICIPATE in our fun engagement activities and contests – to be shared at a later date (STARTING IN MAY) 

INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISING - We gently encourage you to BECOME AN INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISER if you are willing and able. (Now – May 31st)

5K (In-Person Race) Details and Updates:

Hello BEST Kids Superheroes!

We are so excited to be with you in person for our 9th Annual Superhero 5K and Fun Run this Saturday, May 1st at Hains Point, DC. We wanted to provide you with some information in preparation for the race. Check-in will be from 6:45AM – 7:45AM. The adult and youth (ages 12 and under) 5K race will begin promptly at 8:00AM. The Fun Run will start at 9:00AM or when all 5K runners have crossed the finish line, whichever comes first. This is a rain or shine event, therefore the event will still take place even if it rains. Lastly, we encourage you to dress up like your favorite superhero. It is not mandatory, but we would love for you to join in the fun.

COVID-19 Safety and Protocol
Our goal is to keep all participants, volunteers, and staff members involved with the event safe and healthy while complying with the federal and local guidelines and requirements. We ask that each participant review and follow the guidelines listed below.
If you have any COVID symptoms, please be respectful of everyone and stay home.

  • Upon your arrival, a BEST Kids staff or volunteer member will take your temperatures prior to check in.
  • Anybody with an elevated temperature will not be permitted to enter the waiting area or race and their registration will be transferred to a virtual race registration free of charge.
  • Staff and volunteers will be placed throughout the waiting area to enforce mask wearing and distancing guidelines.
  • Each participant will be provided with personal hand sanitizer and a sanitizer station will be placed in the waiting area.
  • Participants will be asked to wear facial coverings when heading from their vehicles to the start line and will also be asked to wear a facial covering when they complete the race.
  • There will be no awards ceremony to prevent gathering in larger numbers.  Awards will be announced and can be picked up at the check-in tent on your way out.  
  • There will be no interactive kids’ activities this year other than the foot races.

Start Line Staggering
There will not be a “mass start.”  All participants will receive an individual timing chip that will allow them to be spaced at the start line in order to comply with social.

Parking
If you are using a GPS, enter East Potomac Golf Course as the destination. Park anywhere along Ohio Drive or at the back parking lot to the left at the golf course. There will be signs and BEST Kids personnel who will guide you.

Virtual 5K Details and Updates:

Hello BEST Kids Superheroes,

Our virtual 5K race kicks off tomorrow!!! We are so excited for you to join our 9th Annual Superhero 5K and Fun Run virtually as we celebrate Foster Care month throughout the month of May. The virtual race begins May 1st and will end May 31st. A virtual race is a race that can be ran or walked from any location you choose. You can run, jog, or walk on the road, on a trail, on a treadmill, or on a track. You get to run your race at your own pace and time it yourself, all while being a Superhero!

Once you have completed your race, you will need go to the results page. You will then click on “Submit Virtual Results.” You will then be prompted to enter your information to look up your registration and submit your results.

You can also use the RaceJoy app to submit your results. Download the app for free to your mobile device. The race will be activated on the app tomorrow. Type BEST Kids in the search race bar. You will need your bib number in order to enter your results on the app. To find your bib number, visit the race website, click on “find a participant,” and enter your name in the search bar. You will then see your bib number beside your name.
