We aim to create awareness of this organization within our nation-wide community and further our mission of creating and cultivating a community network dedicated to supporting college-aged women and nonbinary folks in the outdoors.

Who We Are

In 2015, Backcountry Squatters began as a club at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. Dedicated to supporting women in the outdoors, the success of the club was immediate and requests began coming in from college campuses nationwide wanting to start their own Backcountry Squatters club. In order to serve more communities, some of the original members of Backcountry Squatters created the non-profit organization (501c-3) in order to facilitate and continue growing a network of college communities. Since the nonprofit’s founding in November of 2018, Backcountry Squatters has spread to seven other college campuses across the United States.

Why does it matter?

Backcountry Squatters chapters are an inclusive environment where members can explore their own strengths and the power that comes from adventuring with other women. These communities allow women to freely push the boundaries of what they perceive as possible for themselves. They are rewriting the discourse so that women don’t feel bound by their size, background, or ability.
