Description

This April, Duke NROTC will be holding our 15th Annual Carrie Shoemaker Memorial 5K in memory of ENS Carrie Shoemaker (‘00). After graduating from Duke with a B.S.E and commissioning as a Surface Warfare Officer in the U.S. Navy, Carrie Shoemaker was tragically struck and killed by a drunk driver. We hold this event annually to remember Carrie’s life and to contribute to ongoing efforts towards eliminating drunk driving, with all of the event’s proceeds going to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Twenty-nine people are killed in alcohol-related traffic incidents everyday in the U.S., while another 800 are injured. These occurrences are entirely avoidable and we firmly believe these numbers can be reduced to zero. Since its founding in 1980, MADD has been taking action to achieve this goal through increasing public awareness of the issue, supporting law enforcement efforts to deter drunk driving, and supporting the development of automotive technologies which make it more difficult for repeat offenders to get behind the wheel.

With the support of the Shoemaker family, Duke students and alumni, and the Durham community, we are able to continue this memorial race each year and honor the life of Carrie. Runners and walkers of all ability are invited to join us in our mission of creating a world with “no more victims.” Thank you!
