Top 3 Male and Female in the 5K

This is a family fun morning with some biking and running.   Donations will be made to the Nica Mountain Bike Team.

Bike Course

Both races will start together this year and be taxied out to Holly Shelter Game Land.  Once the races hit Lodge Road both races will remain together and bike clockwise around the Southern portion of the course.

Once both races return back to Lodge Rd via New Rd, the 40 mile will turn left and the 100K will turn right heading over the spillway for the 2nd time.

The 100K will then veer left on Juniper and head toward the Bear Garden northern portion of the course.

100K BIKE COURSE

40 MILE BIKE COURSE

50The neutral start on asphalt will begin the day of adventure into the magical world of Holly Shelter Game land.  After the controlled start on 3 miles of paved tarmac, a sharp right hand turn onto Lodge Road will get your heart rate going.  Approximately 4 miles later, a right turn onto the New Road will test your mettle.  The surface of this road can vary from gummy sand to peanut butter consistency…enjoy the change of environment into this flooded swampland for about 6 miles.  Follow the signs until you reach the right turn onto Tram Road.  The surface improves here with a quick return to gravel riding for roughly 4 miles.  Look for the intersection of Lodge road and bear right for a short 2 mile out and back.  At the turnaround, get ready for a steady state effort for 8 miles through Eastern Carolina Savannah pine forest, keep and eye out for the pitcher plant pond on the right about halfway to the next right hand turn onto Juniper.  Here, the surface and the surrounding environment becomes hostile….your bike handling skills will be tested as you peddle through rough roads for 3 miles.  Approaching a gate, a left hand turn awaits you onto the road leading to Bear Garden.  .  Enjoy the hard packed sand, because after riding for 4-5 miles, you will enter a brief section of gravel biking hell….DEAD SAND.  Only the strong will survive this section of loose dead sand…you must summon all your bike handling skills to clean this section.  An extra biscuit at the end for those that make it through this section without putting a foot down.  From here, the route will improve to gravel again and a noticeable change in scenery as you cross Pine Ridge Hill…notice the topography change as you enter Bear Garden Tract….

Run Course

The 5K run course will stay on our Rocky Point property and meander through our newly created trails and you will even run over some dirt bike jumps to make it interesting.  There are wet spots on the course but most of the course would be cross country style wood chipped trails, sand and mowed grass.
