- Feed a Veteran 5K: November 9th, 2024, in Woodbridge, VA
Description
There are over 1.2 million people in the DMV region who identify as food insecure. In Fairfax County, there are over 80,000 people who are food insecure alone. With this being one of the most affluent areas in the nation, this news is shocking. Due to the lingering effects of COVID and the impact of inflation, food banks and pantries around the region are seeing the demand for services drastically increase. We need your support now more than ever.
The Food for Others Tysons 5K & Fun Run on Saturday, September 28th brings together the local community for morning spent raising awareness around food insecurity here in NOVA. What makes this race incredibly unique is that after the race, all participants and volunteers will have the opportunity to write inspirational messages that will be shared with students participating in our Power Pack Program that provides weekend meal packs to over 3,900 students EACH week throughout the school year.

About Us
Food for Others
Our mission is to distribute food to our neighbors in need by mobilizing our giving community and volunteers.
In our nation’s capital area, the high cost of living forces many families who are struggling to make ends meet to choose between spending money for food, or on other basic needs such as housing and healthcare. Since 1995, Food for Others has been helping many of these families.
Food for Others is an important part of Northern Virginia’s safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes and for the growing number of working poor who need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.
Food for Others obtains much of its food through food rescue operations and food drives. Staff and volunteers pick up good food that would have been discarded by local grocery stores and other retail food establishments. The food is brought to the warehouse for temporary storage, including refrigeration as appropriate. Food drives provide the majority of our non-perishable food.
Local merchants, the USDA, food drives, and crop harvests provide the food; volunteers and staff provide the hands; and charitable contributions and fundraising events provide the funds. Charitable contributions are a major part of Food for Others’ budget.
