November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness month and for the past 9 years, we have kicked it off with a 5k walk/run to raise awareness and support for Alzheimer's in our community. As the current situation with COVID-19 continues to unfold, we have decided that in the best interest of our participants and families the 2020 Turkey Trot for a Cure will be a VIRTUAL race. While we are disappointed and we wish we could gather to together to honor our caregivers and those suffering with Alzheimer's, we realize in order to provide the necessary measures of safety to everyone during the pandemic, this is the best decision we could make.
Through these trying times one thing has not changed, our caregivers still need support and we need to continue to raise awareness of this terrible memory robbing disease. The annual Alzheimer's Association Facts & Figures for 2020 are astounding. Over 5.8 million people in the US have Alzheimer's disease; including 75,000 Kentuckians. The disease affects 1 in 9 older adults and it is the 6th leading cause of death in the US today for which there is no cure; 50% of those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease never receive the diagnosis. On another note, there are as many as 16 million unpaid caregivers! Many reside in Morehead & Rowan County. We hope we can count on you to still register to participate on your own, and help raise funds and awareness.
Even though this year's race will not be the live, in-person event we all look forward to every year, we plan to make this virtual race as fun and interactive as possible. During the "race week" leading up to November 7th we will have contests through out the week. Contests will be judged based on online registrations, fundraising, and photo contest entries. Who will be the best "dressed like a Turkey" pet? Who will have the largest virtual team? Which team will raise the most money? We can't wait to find out!! We will host a Facebook live event on race day to announce winners and recognize those we are participating in honor of.
This year's race packets will include a commemorative shirt, race bib and participation medal. We will mail packets out beginning October 31st. It is imperative that you register early to ensure you get a shirt and we get your packet to you. Standard shipping will apply and will be included in your registration fee.
Since this is a virtual race registration costs will be fixed at $25 for adults and $15 for kids 4-12 to cover the cost of registration plus shipping of packets.
All race proceeds will benefit the St. Claire Foundation's Alzheimer's and Dementia care fund.
A virtual race is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose. You can run, jog or walk on the road, on the trail, at the gym (or even at another race). You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself. Our virtual event will be from October 30th -November 6th. And your medal will be shipped directly to you.
