Description
Join the Moving Health Community for our 5th Annual In Her Shoes 5k!
From May 4th-12th, join us as we Step In Her Shoes for a glimpse of the journey many pregnant women face to get to the nearest hospital to give birth safely in Ghana's last-mile communities.
The In Her Shoes 5k is not just a run; it's a movement—bringing people from across the globe together to amplify awareness and gather resources crucial for ensuring women and their families have unfettered access to safe, reliable emergency transportation in rural communities.
Join us in making a difference by lacing up your shoes and taking steps towards a better future. Your steps, whether taken in your neighborhood, on a trail, or at a local park, resonate far beyond the physical distance you cover. Together, let's stride towards a world where safe and reliable emergency transportation is a reality for every woman, ensuring they receive the care they deserve.
The Challenge:
Globally, almost 800 women die everyday due to preventable pregnancy complications. These complications can be exasperated due to transportation delays in receiving care, which are a major factor in high maternal and infant mortality rates.
This is the reality many women seeking emergency medical care in communities like those in the Upper West Region of Ghana face. In geographically neglected areas, such as rural Ghanaian communities, women and their families often find themselves without a suitable or affordable form of emergency transportation. Many mothers and infants die making the journey on foot or by motorcycle, and those who don't want to risk the journey risk dying of treatable complications at home.
5 kilometers: The minimum distance she would have to walk to the nearest hospital to give birth safely in rural Ghana. That’s 5 kilometers (approximately 3 mi) She has to walk in labor in hot, unyielding sun during the dry season or torrential storms during the rainy season.
Who Is She?
She is not just one woman...She is the multitude of women who have given birth on the side of the road walking to seek medical care.
She is the woman who has had multiple children and never once received postnatal care.
She is the woman who fears for her unborn baby’s life but has no way of getting to the care they need.
