Announcing #OutrunHunger, #OutwalkHunger and #OutstepHunger – let’s get fit while we fight hunger!! 

Now more than ever around the world we need to stay physically fit and emotionally sane while we also stay socially distant. At the same time, those among us who are food insecure are becoming vulnerable, and those that are vulnerable are becoming food insecure. Millions of people have filed for unemployment and the pantries and soup kitchens Rachel’s Table serves are becoming bare. For your sanity and for our community please join our virtual Outrun, Outwalk or Outstep Hunger now!!

#OutrunHunger is Rachel’s Table’s virtual competitive 5k which you can join from wherever you are in the world! From May 1- May 31 you can run or walk your 5k, upload your timing to our runsignup page, and we will share the results and send prizes! Winners will be announced in several age categories. You can race/walk a 5k course near you, map out your own, or use a treadmill! Complete the 5k during the month of May. If you want to race at the exact same time as others, you can run at our original dedicated race time, May 31, 10am EST, and then upload your timing as soon as you’ve finished. We’ll be announcing the results on social media by June 1. The fee for #OutrunHunger, including race fees and a donation to feed people, is $30 including a t-shirt and $25 without a t-shirt. The option to receive a t-shirt ends on May 1, 2020.  T-shirts will be mailed to you or can be picked up local to Springfield, MA once Rachel’s Table offices reopen.

#OutwalkHunger and #OutstepHunger are Rachel’s Table’s virtual non-competitive 1-mile, 5k, 1000 steps, or any amount of running, walking, stepping or dancing your way to health and sanity, outside or in the comfort of your own home, while you support us in our mission to alleviate hunger. You can do this challenge ANY TIME from the present moment to May 31. The fee for #OutwalkHunger and/or #OutstepHunger is $20 – a donation to feed people. You will receive an acknowledgement of gratitude!

What will the $20 go to? $20 can allow us to:

  • Purchase and pack 8 weekend backpacks with nutritious food for 7 meals for children
  • Purchase and send 10 pounds of fresh produce to our 45+ pantries
  • Purchase and deliver 30 pounds of shelf-stable milk to our agencies feeding children
  • Deliver 6 pounds of fresh meat and chicken to our soup kitchens

What is a virtual 5k? 

A Virtual 5K (or any other virtual race) is a race that you choose to complete wherever you would like. You can walk, run, or use a treadmill. The beauty of a virtual 5K race is that you can run the race at your own pace wherever you choose but must be completed on or by a specific date.

How to track your activity time and distance:

- To keep track of your activity time you may use any number of ways including stop watch, gps watch, and smart phone.

- To track your distance you may map out your activity before or after using: https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ or a gps watch.
