Why are we having this race and What is PKU

I started this race to raise awareness of a rare metabolic disease my son Max was born with (pictured below).  Every newborn is now tested for this disease so it is treatable through diet (fruit, veggies, low protien medical foods and prescribed formula).  However this was not always the case.  Before we knew what Phenylketonuria (PKU) was people who had the disorder became severely brain damaged so much so that they hadd to be innsitutionalized and most died young because of complications due to high blood PHE (phenylalanine) levels.  Since their bodies cannot process the PHE properly it builds up in the brain thus causing the brain damage.  Phenylalanine is the building block for protien which is why anyone with PKU must be on a low protien diet of the above mentioned foods.  To look at Max or anyone with PKU today you would never know they had this disorder thanks to the test on newborn screenings.
