Description

WELCOME! My name is Ilea Wesley. I am currently a Life Scout with Scouts BSA Troop 160G in Glen Burnie, MD. For my Eagle Scout project, I wanted to support my local veteran community. I am organizing a virtual 5k run & walk to raise awareness for veterans mental health and suicide issues.

Participants will execute the run/walk on their own--at the time and place of their choosing. Participants are also asked to submit any photos of their participation, and may submit their run/walk times. The run/walk is held during the period 1 Nov - 7 Nov, participants may do their run/walk any time during this period.

Education Fair

On 1 Nov, 10AM - 2PM, there will be an educational fair at Colonel Harry L. Cooper Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 160 (2597 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie, Maryland 21061). It is anticipated that organizations supporting veterans' mental health will be in attendance to provide informational materials. A list of participating organizations will be published as they are confirmed. Local participants are encouraged to do their walk/run at the BWI trail across from the VFW post on 1 Nov so they can participate in the education fair. Early participants can attend the monthly breakfast hosted by VFW Post 160 from 8 am - 11am. The VFW will also have sausages and burgers for sale from 11 am - 2 pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Education Fair

Do I have to attend the education fair and perform my run/walk there?

No, it is not a requirement, but there are several reasons you might want to attend the educational fair. For starters, the fair is across the street from the BWI trail, which provides a great venue for doing the 5k. Before the event (from 8am – 11 am) it is expected that the VFW made to order breakfast will be open to the public, and event participants are welcome to partake in that before or after their run. During the education fair (10am – 2pm) organizations will be on-hand to provide in-person discussion and materials regarding veterans mental health. Also during the fair BBQ lunch will be available (grilled burgers and bacon-wrapped bratwurst).

Do I have to attend the Educational Fair to receive my t-shirt?

No. T-shirts will be delivered to local participants and mailed to out-of-town participants.

Is there an additional cost for the education fair?

No. There is no charge for the in-person education events. Food items will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other organizations supporting veterans’ mental health awareness.

How will COVID concerns be addressed during the education fair?

The education fair will be hosted outdoors at the VFW Post 160.  Demonstrators/organizations will be set up at tables under a pavilion, with proper separation. Masks will be required for attendees when approaching within 6’ of another.  Additionally, temperatures will be taken for all attendees and screening questions asked.

What are plans for inclement weather?

The forecast has changed and we are expecting rain during the event. However, the event will be held under a roofed pavilion.

Is a bathroom available on site?

Yes, bathrooms are available.

Walk/Run – Virtual from any location or In-Person on 1 Nov

Is this a race?

No.  The event is performed at you own pace.   However, those that choose to submit times will be posted on the registration site.  If desired, event participants may print a race bib from the site by going to your Profile under the Upcoming Events Tab through the View Digital Bib link.

Do I have to attend the education fair and perform my run/walk there?

No!  You can perform your run/walk any time during 1 November – 7 November.  The kick-off event in Glen Burnie (near BWI airport) will have some extra in-person activities and education, but it is NOT required to attend in-person on 1 November. However, the proximity to the BWI trail provides a great location for one to perform their walk/run, while also participating with others and learning more.

Can I register for the walk/run at the kick-off event the day of (1 November) or do I have to register via the website in advance?

Registration can be in-person at the kick-off on 1 November.  Additionally, registration for those not attending the kick-off can be processed up until 7 November.  Any questions contact info@veteransmentalhealth5k.org

What is included in the run registration fee?

Registration fees will cover cost of T-shirts for all run/walk participants, event supplies, and any additional costs for running the event. Any funds remaining after costs will be turned over the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other organizations supporting veterans’ mental health.

Volunteers

How can volunteers help during the event?

Volunteers during the education fair will be put at stations for card making, registration, and giveaways. There will also be a need for roaming COVID-19 monitors, and sanitation. Volunteers should arrive no earlier than 8:30 to help with set up and expect to leave around 3:15. Volunteers do not have to stay for the entire time, but I would appreciate some idea of what time slot to schedule people for. Additional information will follow for those who contact me and state they would like to volunteer. Walk-up volunteers are welcome the day of. All volunteers are required to wear a mask for the duration of the event. I appreciate your assistance in my project!

How can volunteers help after the kickoff event?

Volunteers can assist with packing and addressing mailers with t-shirts and educational materials for participants that are out-of-town.
