Schools Offer Support (SOS) is a nonprofit organization that serves members of the Birmingham Public Schools community through outreach efforts, financial support, and volunteer activities. SOS is committed to helping those in need and teaching students that community matters. SOS was founded in 2008 by a group of parents that wanted to work with students to build a stronger community through acts of kindness. You can read more about the mission on our website. This annual race is our biggest fundraiser of the year and helps us support a vast array of community needs. Your participation will help SOS to continue supporting families in our community. Some examples of our outreach for the 24-25 school year are:
· 59 requests for support from families in nearly all of our BPS schools
· Provided nearly $13,000 in financial assistance for medical, utility, groceries, childcare, and clothing bills
· Assembled and provided 135 non-perishable food bags to assist families in need over school breaks
· Provided $10,000 in scholarships to 2024 graduating seniors through Barbara and Sheldon Weisberg SOS Laptop Scholarship
· Combined with donations from the community provided $29,300 in gift cards and cash to 74 families from 12 BPS schools to assist with holiday shopping for 293 people
Respecting family privacy is paramount; all needs are filled anonymously.
