Description
This will be a 5K run or walk around Central Michigan University’s campus that is sponsored by the Physical Therapy Student Organization (PTSO) for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS is an autoimmune disease in which the covering of nerves is broken down. Proceeds from the event will go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. For more information, please visit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society website (nationalmssociety.org).
There are three types of MS. Relapsing-remitting MS involves a person experiencing a flare up of symptoms that will eventually recede with time. Secondary-progressive MS involves a person gradually experiencing symptoms in which may or may not recede. Lastly, primary-progressive MS involves a gradual onset of symptoms with no remission. Someone with MS may experience symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, fatigue, trouble walking, vision problems, and shock like pain with neck movements. A diagnosis of MS can take a significant amount of time, the average diagnosis taking up to 2 years. Once MS is diagnosed, physical therapy is one of the health professionals a person might see. Physical therapy can help strengthen muscles, improve the ability to walk, help balance and coordination, and improve overall mobility. Although physical therapy cannot cure MS, it can help improve the quality of life and independence of the person with the diagnosis.
