The 5th annual Downtown Run Around benefiting Mile in My Shoes is here! We’re thrilled to plan our return to an in-person event on August 15th, 2021, with a 5K race for all ages and Kids' 1/2-mile on the iconic Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis (COVID restrictions permitting).
We’re also offering virtual options including 1 mile, 5K, and 10K runs—plus the "Hat Trick" challenge to run all three! All options bring you team and fundraising contests, plus an inspiring and active online community throughout the training season and into race day. Join us the weekend of August 15 from wherever you are!
Choose how you’ll join us:
The Downtown Run Around (DRA) brings together MiMS participants and community runners and servers as our biggest fundraising event. DRA FundRacers help us raise money that supports our programs year-round - and we help you every step of the way. FundRacers receive tips and resources, stories and insight from past FundRacers, newsletters and meet-ups to connect with other FundRacers, and contests and incentives (check out the list here) to motivate you through race day. Ready to take your DRA experience to the next level? Sign up here.
You've registered for the race, now share the “Woo” by inviting your friends, neighbors and co-workers to join you in supporting MiMS either in person or virtually -- and earn rewards for yourself. How it works:
1. Sign up for any of the Downtown Run Around events (excluding the Kid ½-mile).
2. You will receive a personalized referral link in your confirmation email to share with your friends, family or post on social media. They will use that link to register for the race.
3. Get rewarded! You’ll get credit for every new participant who registers for the DRA through your personal referral link. Be sure your friends are using your unique referral when they register so you get credit!
4. Keep sharing and promoting your link. You will help MiMS meet our registration goal, plus the person with the most referrals will be rewarded with an exclusive prize.

You can even create a Team FundRacing page and aim to raise the most money for MiMS!

Mile in My Shoes was founded on the belief that we are all better humans when we run a mile in someone’s else’s shoes. Beneath the labels of “homeless” or “convict” there is so much more to each of us — more worth getting to know and understand and love. Our lives are richer when we get to know others in a deep, meaningful way. And by offering the gift of running to others, we gain so much in return.
Mile in My Shoes teams end each run by cheering every last runner to the finish through a “spirit arch.” The arch signifies that we are all in this together, to the very last runner, and the support that you receive when you bring your best. When you join a MiMS event, you are showing our members that we are in this together, and that we support one another’s journeys.
In 2020 we pivoted to virtual spirit arches with small distanced teams that connected runners via text, phone, and Zoom to keep the MiMS community alive. As we move into 2021, we will continue bringing the "woo" virtually, and as soon as safety permits, in person. One of our strongest lessons of 2020 was that positivity and support -- whether delivered in person or electronically -- transforms the lives of residents and mentors alike, and breaks down barriers within ourselves and between each other.
One of our strongest lessons of 2020 was that positivity and support -- whether delivered in person or electronically -- transforms the lives of resident members and mentors alike, and breaks down barriers within ourselves and between each other. In our runners' own words:
"What could be better than starting your day to applause? I run for the WOO!"
"I've never been part of such a supportive group. Up until Mile in My Shoes, all I ever heard every day is "You are worthless." Now I come to MiMS and feel like I can be successful at something."
"This is the best part of my week. I wouldn't miss it."
