The beautiful thing about community is when people can come together from the bottom places of their stories, when they decide to rise up beyond the fear, beyond the shame and beyond the tough miles. Making it together to their finish line, their voice, their truth and their freedom. The strength was in them all along, they just had to see it was possible.
Statistically, 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males are sexually abused by 18 years of age. It is one of the most prevalent health problems facing children. It is also preventable. It is highly likely that you know a child who has or is being sexually abused. Unfortunately, 62% of the child victims never report the abuse. Suicide attempts are 3 times more likely for people who experienced sexual abuse. They are 2-3 times more likely to have a drug dependence. Seventy-five percent of women who enter substance abuse treatment programs report being sexually abused.
Breaking the Silence to Sexual Abuse 5K & 10K is an opportunity for our community to do what it's known for, coming together as one. It's a community taking steps alongside each other as survivors and supporters. It's an awareness that our children need for us to have so that we can protect them and it's a freedom that survivors need from their silence and shame.
This, like any race, goes beyond the actual running. It's overcoming our bodies, our minds and the silence...together.
I invite you to be a part of the impact.
