Description
Richie's Race (Officially Timed Mile) & Mary's Miles (Walk)
We are very excited to announce our Mary Therese Rose Fund Run/Walk in Memory of Rich DuHaime. In prior years, this was 5K Run/Walk formerly held in Darlington County Park in Mahwah. NJ. This year’s event will feature milers competing on the inner six lanes at the Lakeland Regional High School track. The walkers will be cheering them on from the outside two lanes, while raising funds for the cause. Mile runs are all the rage. Everyone within a stone's throw of Wanaque can see how fast (or slow) they can tackle a mile (5,280 feet/4 laps around the track), while having active fundraisers cheer them on
In Memory of Rich DuHaime
Rich and his family have been recipients of assistance through the fund for their special needs child and dedicated the last 10 years to raise funds for the children of the Mary Therese Rose Fund. Rich unexpectedly passed away on May 4th, 2021, and our fund has decided to honor his life and dedication to our charity.
About the Mary Therese Rose Fund
This fund was founded in honor of Mary Therese Rose Crilly who was born in 1998 with Joubert Syndrome, and who sadly passed away in 2003. We are a nonprofit organization, registered with the State of New Jersey as a 501(c)(3) organization, making all of your donations tax-deductible. Mile Event FOOTPRINT(S)!
What to Expect in a Mile Event
Mile events (or races) are traditionally conducted in heats where each participant occupies their own lane on a curve (see image below) prior to starting out and lapping the quarter (1/4) mile oval four (4) time from an innermost lane. Mile events are timed for speed where elite runners have been known to break the four (4) minute mark. This mile event will give you the opportunity run full out with a flip side for those inclined to walk!
About the Track
A standard quarter mile oval has eight (8) lanes. The Lakeland High School tack has six (6). Richie's RUN event will primarily utilize the four (4) interior lanes while the walkers of Mary's Mile, the outside (remaining) two (2) lanes. Additional Runners will be fed from the INFIELD during the event. Walkers will enter the walking lanes from the tracks OUTER EDGE.
Timing each MILE...
The Run will be electronically timed by Tristate Timing. Walkers will be provided with their own stopwatch and can share, record their times or others via a manual log sheet. Runners and walkers will start in shared heats of four (4) runners (when permissible) with one to two (1-2) walkers should they wish a formal start. Add'l runners will be staggered in from the INFIELD with walkers will OCCUPY the TRACKS OUTER EDGE. Walkers will cheer the runners on from the outer lanes (5-6). Walkers will also be covering slightly more than a mile, (1.068 miles to be exact) however their mile pace will be calculated when entered from the log sheet to align to the event's 1 MILE distance.
Runners get 2!!!
Each Running (...walkers, as many as they want provided their stopwatch!) participant will have two (2) opportunities at the mile. The better or faster time will be recorded/reported for the runner. Participants will be called up in a serial fashion provided their assigned bib numbers. Awards will be given for the fastest times with randomly selected prizes for the walkers. Should there be any questions please reach out prior to signing up.
Participant Race Day Information
Greetings Runners! If you will be joining the Mary Therese Rose Fund Supportors on the morning of June 1st here is some helpful information to make the most of you time while on the Lakeland High School Track.
Walkers!
The first fifty (50) of you will be armed with a personal stop to time anyone you'd like, including yourself. The instructions to use the stopwatch (and the stopwatch app on your iphone if you prefer or supplies run out) are below. For starters, when you unpack the stopwatch, it will not be in the correct mode. Once on the ELAPSED TIME (mode) SCREEN the rest is easy, as you will start/stop and reset, to time again.

How to Use the Stopwatch on an iPhone: Step-by-step Tutorial
It also important to know that walkers will use the outside lanes of the track. You enter these lanes from the WALKER LANE ENTRY GATE denoted in the picture below. IF you would like to "hang out" in the INFIELD, to watch the races, perhaps with your bff (bring a blanket if you'd like) you can and should ONLY use the WALKER CROSSOVER GATE (also picture in the image below). Please ensure NO Runners or Walkers are approaching (in YOUR immediate proximity) the start/finish which is situated in front of the grandstand. ONLY cross when the coast is truly clear to ensure those giving it their all don't have to encounter an unforeseen obstacle in their path, YOU! ;)
Runners!
You will have two (2) attempts at the MILE. When initially reaching REGISTRATION, you will be assigned your first bib. Once pinned on you will want to stay out of the flagged area (TIMING READ ZONE), pictured below until you are ready to run. Once inside the flagged area your bib will be read/detected, and you have two (2) minutes to start your attempt. If you like you first "recorded" time (check RunSignUp Results) then congrats and you can hang back and wait to see how you placed (keep checking RunSignUp Results). If you'd like a second crack at the MILE, please head back to the registration table to obtain your second, bib#. Once in hand, swap bibs at the registration table and ensure the volunteer writes your new bib number on the back of your old bib. Then when ready head to the start area. Ensure you are outside the flagged area and let the timer know (a member of the timing staff will be engaging runners at the "flagged" barrier) you are going to make a second attempt at the MILE. The timer will set your new bib and instruct you on how to proceed. You will again have two (2) minutes to start once in the flagged area. Once complete please check the RunSignUp Results to see you two (2) MILE times. It's now time to kick back and wait for the final results, which will be posted to RunSignUp after the last MILE attempt finishes..
Note: Runners you will congregate in the INFIELD. Upon entering or exiting the INFIELD please use the WALKERS CROSSOVER (pictured above) to do so, taking care not to disrupt another Runners MILE attempt.
