While in person races are suspended, you can still stay active and compete by signing up for Not Your Average Virtual Race's 5K, 10K, or 1/2 Marathon—a virtual race with a twist! This virtual race is put on by Embarc, a runner training startup from Durham, North Carolina that generates custom training routes for runners based on their preferences. Embarc’s route generating technology helps provide each runner with a course of a similar difficulty level—preserving competition in the age of virtual races.  Finally, by signing up, you will fund 25 meals distributed through Feeding America affiliated food banks in North Carolina and Long Island, helping those in need during the pandemic.  You will also receive a medal, a performance t-shirt, and a race bib (you can see pictures of all in the registration!)

What is your average Virtual Race?

A virtual race is one that you run or walk on your own, at any time of day. Most virtual races allow you to run the race on any course in any place you like—we’re a bit different and we’ll get to that next.

Why is this race "Not Your Average Virtual Race?”

Most virtual races tend to favor the runner with the steepest downhill slope.  Our race aims to level the playing field by providing each runner with a course of a similar difficulty level, regardless of their location. You’ll let us know the general area you plan on starting from and we’ll send you a route to run!  Our course parameters will provide a racecourse with moderate elevation gain and non-trail terrain, to the extent that that is possible in your community.  This way, you’ll see how you truly stack up against the other racers!  Of course, make sure that you are safe and following rules of the road. There won’t be event staff there to shut down intersections. Stop for cars and run or walk on sidewalks or the left-hand shoulder of the road and stay visible at all times.  Virtual races are a way to stay connected with one another when you can't get together for an in-person race. We’re all physically separate, but we will all run or walk many different versions of the same 5K, 10K, or 1/2 marathon.

What Do I Get?

Racers will receive:

  1. A race day bib (wearing it is optional, but fun!)
  2. Finisher's certificate
  3. The satisfaction of funding of 25 meals split between two Feeding America food banks
    1. Island Harvest, located in Bethpage, New York
    2. Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, located in Raleigh, North Carolina
  4. ($35 Option Only) Finisher's medal to commemorate your achievement
  5. ($35 Option Only) Finisher's moisture wicking performance t-shirt

How far do I run?

It depends on your race distance. We are offering a 5K, 10K, and Half-Marathon option.  You must track your run on your smartphone via the free navigation app "RunGo"—the preferred navigation app of the Not Your Average Virtual Race—as it will ensure you stay on your “course."

Important: Please follow all social distancing guidelines and maintain at least 6 feet between you and others. Additionally, be sure to follow your own state and local restrictions about public spaces, trails, or running locations.

Who can participate?

Anyone! That’s the beauty of virtual races.

What do I do after I finish my race?

When the race period starts, you can submit your results by going to the "Results" tab of this website and clicking on the "Submit Virtual Results" button. You will be emailed instructions reminding you how to submit your time. After doing that, you must submit an image of your run from the running app that you used to complete the race to Finally, we’d love for you to share your race story or race selfies on social media!

Do I get a medal? A shirt? A bib? A post-race donut?

Yes, yes, yes, and you’re on your own for that one. You’ll receive an email shortly after registering containing your downloadable, printable, tape it to your shirt-able custom race bib. We will send out a medal and a shirt to all of our finishers within a few weeks of the race ending. A post-race donut is highly encouraged, but we cannot send you one of those without risking spoilage.

How long do I have to finish the race?

The Race Period will begin on Friday, May 22nd at 5:00 AM EDT and end Monday, May 25th, 2020 at 8:00 PM EDT.  You can run and submit your race any time during this period. You must complete the distance you signed up for, and you have to do it within the Race Period.
