Description
Start date: Friday, May 15, 2020
You can now choose either swim, bike or the most popular option of run.
Since we are all still sheltering in place, we thought that it might be fun to put all of those running and walking miles to use. One day while running we thought “We should run across the state of New York” and that is how the New York State Virtual Run 434 was created. 434 stands for the distance from Niagara Square in Buffalo to Times Square in New York City. Since we are not allowed to actually run down I-90, I-87, or I-95, we thought that it would be a fun route to take virtually.
Wait, you want us to run 434 miles? Yes, except that the time to complete this is from May 15 at 12:00 a.m. to September 15 at 11:59 p.m. OK, so some of you are thinking “Yeah, I can do that,” and others are thinking “I know I cannot do that.” So, we came up with 5 different options to challenge yourself. Pick your finish line.
5 Finish Line Options
NYSVR70 - Niagara Square to Rochester (70 miles)
NYSVR150 - Niagara Square to Syracuse (150 miles)
NYSVR290 - Niagara Square to Albany (290 miles)
NYSVR434 - Niagara Square to Times Square (434 miles)
NYSVR868 - Niagara Square to Times Square and Back (868 miles)
Now you are asking, “What if I choose Rochester as my initial finish line, but I want to go farther because we still have time?” Well then, keep logging those miles until the September 15 deadline because it will pay off handsomely with your own personal psyche as well as additional stars on your medal. Everyone enters the NYSVR434, but it's up to you to decide which city that you are going to stop at or continue on and push farther than you ever have before.
Submit My Miles
How do I go about submitting the miles that I have completed each day? Each person will have a specific URL emailed to them use to enter their data daily. It will also show you where you are on the virtual race course as well as a leader board, runners’ segment board, and some simple info about each location you are passing.
Shirts
Each person registered will receive a race shirt in the size that you choose that we will ship to you. There will be a choice between men and women sizes. Keep in mind that the women’s sizes are junior cut.
Medals
We will also ship to you a custom finisher’s medal. Each medal will start with a red star at Niagara Square. To earn this medal, you must pass the 70-mile marker at Rochester. This will earn you your first finishers star which is a magnet. Pass Syracuse to get an additional star. Make it all the way to Times Square in New York City to receive all of the stars. For those of you that decide to run all the way back to Buffalo we will send you something special in addition to your medal.

FAQs
How far do I have to run or bike or swim?
- As far as you like. Mileage will be tracked up to 868 miles.
Do I have to sign up for the distance I want?
- Nope. We decided to leave this open-ended, so your distance is as far as you want to go. Your finisher medal will be determined by your total distance.
How long do I have to complete this?
- From May 15 through September 15. Only miles run, biked, or swam on those days can be used.
Do I have to start on May 15?
- No, you don't, but Rich said he is!!! ;)
Can I use miles tracked before May 15?
- No. This event is only for activities performed May 15 through September 15.
What kind of miles can be counted?
- Miles can only be counted when that is the primary activity engaged in and it is measurable.
- use a pre-measured course.
- use a device (ie Garmin) that will measure distance.
- walk/run/bike and afterwards use google maps, mapmyrun, or plot-a-route to get distance.
- treadmills and bike trainer programs are allowed if they provide distance.
- NOT ALLOWED - daily steps accumulated on a fitness app or golfing, etc. - not primary activity.
- NOT ALLOWED - converted miles, ie: estimating how far you would have run based on how much time was spent biking.
Do I need some type of app or device to upload miles?
- Nope, you only need a way to figure out how far you went (see above) and the ability to type that in.
Can I still enter miles if I missed a day or I signed up after the race start?
- Yes, you can always go back to a prior day and enter your mileage.
Can multiple entries be made in one day (ie: I ran twice)
- Yes and No. Only one entry per day will be counted. So:
- If you plan to perform an activity multiple times per day, enter the total time and total distance for that day.
- If you already made an entry for that day, simply re-enter the total time and total distance. Your prior entry will be REPLACED.
Can I use my swim, bike, and run mileage for this event?
- Swim mileage can only be used for the swim event.
- Bike mileage can only be used for the bike event and may include any outdoor mileage whether it’s on the road or trail. You can also include indoor mileage on the trainer including programs like Zwift or Sufferfest, spinning bike etc. You just need to be able to track the mileage that you completed.
- Run mileage, which is what we initially planned for, can be on the road or trails and can include walking and hiking. You can also include treadmill miles. You just need to be able to track them so that you can enter them daily once we send you your special link.
Can I enter two or three of these divisions?
- Yes, you can. You don't have to make it to Times Square in NYC for all three divisions. Maybe you “swim” only to Rochester, but you’re able to “run” to Albany. On top of that, you “bike” to NYC and then all the way back to Niagara Square in Buffalo. It's totally up to you on where you want to stop for each distance. Keep in mind it should be fun.
Can my children participate?
- Yes, they can. We just ask that you allow them to only do activities that are acceptable for their age.
Do we get beer at the finish line?
- Yes, as long as you supply it for yourself.
Can you add a duathlon or a triathlon to this event?
- Well, we did sort of, but not in the truest sense.
Do you have unisex shirts?
- We are offering both men's and women's. Ladies please keep in mind that yours are junior cut.
