As you approach the 50 mile mark, you will see the northernmost tip of Lake Wamala. This freshwater lake spans nearly 100 square miles and is dotted by numerous islands but it was once much bigger. About 40,000 years ago, Lake Wamala was part of Lake Victoria, one of the “African Great Lakes,” but its waters receded over time. The lake is home to several rare endangered species including the sitatunga, a swamp-dwelling antelope. A local legend claims the Lake’s name comes from King Wamala, a 15th century African monarch who disappeared from a nearby fishing village. The legend holds that his spirit still dwells at the Lake.
