Our 150-mile mark brings us to the Sentinel Tree! Arguably, one of the more iconic trees in Giant Forest, the Sentinel Tree stands at 257 ft with a cubic volume of 27,900ft! During the early years of the park, the National Park Service built infrastructure all around the Sentinel Tree including a campground across the street, a gas station just to the right of the Sentinel Tree, and a restaurant and bar where the Giant Forest Museum is now. It was a busy place – but it wasn’t necessarily a “healthy forest”. Managing a thriving hub along with a delicate ecosystem turned out to be incongruous so the park service moved this “hub” 5-miles up the road to Lodgepole where it remains today. This restoration project was the largest of its kind and left us with the healthy and thriving forest we see today.

Next time you are in Sequoia National Park, visit the Giant Forest Museum to see historical pictures of all these buildings! Until then, visit the Giant Forest Restoration page to learn more!

Okay, you’ve got 50-miles to go, just 50. We’ll see you at mile 175! Remember, you’ve got this, we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way!
