Sunset Rock is a special place in Giant Forest. As its name suggests, it is a perfect spot to catch the sunset. As the sun sets on the western horizon, be amazed as the last light of day decorates the Sierra Nevada in one of the most beautiful colors – alpenglow.

A visit to Sunset Rock doesn’t just delight you with beautiful colors, but it also reveals the story of fire in Giant Forest. As you walk from the Giant Forest Museum to Sunset Rock, you can see the diverse story of fire along the 1-mile trail. On the east side of the trail, you see a forest treated by prescribed fire, and on the west side of the trail, the devastation that wildfire brings to the forest.

Fire is one of the most crucial yet also one of the most complicated stories in the Giant Forest. A story that is worth learning and telling! We invite you to read more about Fire in the Giant Forest – with 15-20% of the world's monarch sequoias being destroyed by wildfire in just the last two years; the sequoias need our help more now than ever.

Will you join us to help save the monarchs?

Keep crushing those goals!
